Change user ID

Ensure that no processes owned by user <username> are running. Login as root ...

# ps -U <username>

and kill these processes. Then change the UID:

# usermod -u <new-uid> <username>

This will only change files/directories uids within the home directory of the depending user. Changing the ownership of files and directories outside the home directory must be done manually.
